Culture. In recent years, DeLand has positioned itself as a growing cultural community. Fresh cultural expression is easy to find. The downtown area is always hosting events such as art shows, as well as having the Athens Theater as a fixture. Culture is expressed in the downtown shops and restaurants themselves such as Thai, Vietnamese, Greek and Chinese cuisines.
Location. Because of its geography, DeLand can draw from several areas nearby. With quick access to the Volusia County beaches as well as the Greater Orlando area, it's a great place to commute to and from. You don’t have to travel far to be at key places, yet the city has its own natural charm that separates itself from these places.
Growth. Residential growth usually feeds commercial growth. A high growth concentration in the south side of town such as the Victoria Park area have lended to new establishments such as Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, a new Publix, etc. Growth studies have proven this, and it translates to increased revenue and employment opportunities.
Diverse Industries. A multinational insulation company, a Fortune 500 medical company and a large tele support company all call DeLand home. Perhaps it is the small businesses that are the most diverse. Law firms or tech firms, no matter what it is, DeLand is welcoming and neighborly, which leads to the last point.
Community. For those that are starting small businesses, this may be the single most important reason why they choose DeLand. Community support is key, whether it is from the Chamber of Commerce, Mainstreet Business Association, or the countless coffee shop-based independent businesses who support each other and connect each other to potential opportunities to make them successful. No matter the size of business, many of DeLand's successful business owners can testify that community support has been a hallmark.
Do you have a business idea? If so, maybe DeLand makes sense to hang your hat.
